Critic's Choice: Leonard Maltin's Best Movie Themes of the '90s Critic's Choice: Leonard Maltin's Best Movie Themes of the '90s

Reviews

I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory." Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection. The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement. Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!

Both Actors are Wounderful Outstanding Movie .Just a little preview of the movie does good..It's a Top Rate Movie I had it on VHS and wanted it on DVD, The only thing I did not like was they put it on 2 sides. Why they could not have all of it on one side like a regular movie I don't know... Hate that!!! I purched a second movie hoping it was not devided . But it was . I did not see where it stated that it was divided..It is not that long of a movie to have done that. SassKit

This is a keeper. We love watching this movie over and over; year after year. The suspenseful story never gets old. Acting and editing are superb.

I really like this film but I hate Warner brothers. Warning you must flip this film! It's really iritating. Don't bother searching for a format that you don't need to flip. Real bad move for a real good film. So never buy it new or at full price. Always buy second hand and you will never feel ripped off. Like Beat the Devil it really is a fine film that was mishandled.

This is one of the first movies I ever saw with Julia Roberts, one of my favorite actors and of course Denzel Washington is great in everything he does. I love John Grisham novels as well and this movie stayed pretty close to the book unlike some of the other movies from his books. It is a bit difficult to follow at first as there are dozens of shady characters and you never know who is a good guy or bad guy. It does help if you read the book first but still a very enjoyable movie,

The product arrived and was, as advertised, a used DVD of the Pelican Brief movie. It was somewhat scratched up and I had to put it through my cleaning/conditioning machine a couple of times before it would play without interruption. While that was disappointing, all turned out well and the movie was great.

Another John Grisham legal thriller comes to the screen, pairing Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in a film directed by Alan J. Pakula, who is known for dark-hued suspense pictures such as Klute, The Parallax View, All the President's Men, and Presumed Innocent...

I don't know who manufactured this "new" DVD but they shipped a DVD, burned on both sides, with the end of side 2 looking like my Direct TV when a thunderstorm is coming in. A powerful movie, completely unviewable right at the dramatic ending.

This movie was made in 1996, yet it's 2010 when I'm watching it! Those two rapists definitely got what they deserved! The Republicans must have been outraged about that! lol

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and the first time I have ever seen Mathew McConaughey in a movie and he is the greatest. I love Samuel L Jackson also but have seen him do a great job before.

i have enjoyed this movie many times over. i read the book three times and watched the movie at least 3 times. now i have captured the movie in BLUE RAY, and added it to my library.

Old ways die hard... and even now in the fast-changing American South, some old ways die harder than others. It's the lesson learned by Carl Lee Hailey, a Mississippi factory worker, when his ten-year-old daughter is brutally assaulted by two racist thugs on a drunken spree. A Time to Kill is an incredible movie and probably in my opinion is Schumacher's best. McConaughey and Jackson deliver some of their best performances in this movie. A great movie to watch and enjoy.

Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer - Audio Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer - Audio

Reviews

I didn't realize that this book seems to be geared towards young adults. Should have guessed perhaps, the title gave a clue. Still, it was a good story and I did enjoy it.

As an avid Grisham fan, I was eager to read the latest of his work available: Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer did not disappoint. Although clearly written for a younger audience, the story moved along with more than enough of Grisham's usual twists and surprises to keep me involed with the characters and the plot. The read, as usual, was over much too soon. The real bonus of this book came with it's sharing with some of my young friends and grandchildren (several fit both catagories!) Their responses have been joyful and exuberant. How wonderful to share my interest with them and contribute to their summer reading! Thank you, again, John Grisham - can't wait for your release which I've preordered for October.

My son (age 14) and I read this together. He enjoyed the easy flow of the book. The words were age appropriate and the interest of the book held his attention (which is not easy at this age). I hope there are other books to follow soon to keep his interest.

I teach sixth grade ELA and I wholeheartedly, without hesitation or apprehension, endorse this book FOR YOUNG ADULTS. It has great purpose - to introduce inquisitive minds to the in/outs of the legal system, simple plot, easy-to-relate-to characters, and minimal detail ... all set at a fairly quick pace. The ending? Yes, it's quick, precise, and unclear. This book is supposed to be a first in a series, thus the cliffhanger ending. And it asks for the reader to take an action that many YA books require. Make an inference. You decide what happened. Better yet, find textual evidence. No more crushing on Encyclopedia Brown. Theo Boone is the leading crime story hero now! Please give us more, Mr. Grisham.

Obviously all set for the next one, clearly planning on a whole series??? Probably be quite popular, as all his adult books are, right?

Ford County: Stories Ford County: Stories

Reviews

An avid Grisham fan, I selected the audio version of Ford County for a long solo trip thinking short stories would be perfect for travel between stops. I have never been more disappointed. Mr. Grisham's reading sapped the characters of color and depth and absolutely ruined his normally lively atories. I cannot imagine Random House allowing such a travesty by a writer of his caliber. His tone is monotonous and his phrasing stilted and sing-song at best. Why do this to wonderful stories when there are so many talented artists who can bring the pages of a book to life? It is just bad, bad, bad.

This is a collection of short stories. They are not long enough to develop the plot or characters as Grisham usually does. It is worth the time to read.

Wherever it is, I hope you've gone someplace that has lots of anti-depression meds. Would you share some with me? I feel that I need them after checking out this book at my public library. When I saw "Ford County" sitting there on the shelf, I couldn't pick it up fast enough. I have loved your legal thrillers, set with a pace so fast, the pages practically crackle. Your characters have been memorable, heroes you love to love and villains you love to hate. You gave me one of my favorite characters in the world of fiction: Reggie Love. I was enthusiastic when you branched out with novellas like "Skipping Christmas" and "Playing for Pizza" -- I gave you great reviews on both of those books right here on Amazon. "A Painted House," crafted in the fine old Southern tradition, just took my breath, it was so good. It was one of those books that I finished....and then opened it right back up to the first page and read it again. So why, knowing your talent for crisp plots, action and suspense, gentle humor and well-drawn characters, have you foisted this collection of depressing stories on your public? I kept reading, thinking that surely I'd find something worth my time, but all I got was a headache and a deflated feeling and a desire -- heaven help me -- to flee to the gooey-sweetest, happily-ever-after bit of brainless chick-lit I could find as an antidote to this mess. John, you can be such an entertaining writer. You have the ability to write a redemption story like few others. Your novels have pride of place on so many bookshelves around the world. You don't have to write this depressing, nihilistic crap wherein the characters are either the same losers they were at the story's beginning, or sunk even farther into loserdom, or dead. I'm not saying that unicorns and fairy dust have to fall out of the pages of whatever book you write next, but COME ON. This is lazy writing, negative and just....lacking. It reminds me of the stuff churned out by male undergrads in un-airconditioned off-campus apartments who fancy themselves to be the next Faulkner and just had a birthday that enabled them to buy cheap beer at Kroger. Please come back to us.

I am a reader. I adopted South Mississippi as my home nearly forty years ago but I work overseas for long periods of time and treasure my Kindel as my primary link to the English language. Most of the stories in this book read like a letter from home. I know most of these people well, or folks just like them. I only wish that this particular book was much longer. I read most of Grisham's early novels but after 4-5 I tired of the legal topics. This novel was a refreshing change and I will probably go back and read the "in-betweeners".....

Several of these stories are excellent. Gresham most always writes well, with plausible storylines and well drawn, interesting characters. A couple of these short stories are among the best things he has written. On the whole, however, he gets an "incomplete" for this work. A short story should have a beginning, middle and end. Several of these seem to be missing their last few pages. Without a conclusion it is just a sketch, not a story.
