Major PayneReviewsI was disappointed with the visual quality of the movie. It was not what I expected. It is a family and comedy movie. Well the movie is funny and a good movie to watch with your friends and family. Hope you enjoy it too which I did a lot!!^_^ There is nothing funny about this movie. There were 7 of us, teen and up, who watched half or more of Major Payne and nobody ever laughed because it was just plain stupid and not funny. Nobody wanted to watch it to the end. The story could be a good one but the acting and the way it was portrayed was terrible. In order to win a war games competition, an insane Army major must convert a group of dysfunctional kids into true american heros. Major Payne is amusing. The story has a lot of potential, and much of it is shown. It is a very good comedy and a good spare-time watcher. I got this and SGT Bilko in that two in one package. Well, things were exactly backwards to what I had expected. Bilko was was just plain dumb and barely tolerable, while Major Payne turned out to be enjoyable and fun. Damon Wayans creates a memorable character that brings lots of laughs, and then a story that takes comedic advantage of that character is built around him. Wayans is a good comedian with great timing/expressions. Bilko is just a ham sandwich with a cheesy wilted storyline. There are many funny bits in MP, and well directed enough to warrant another watch down the road. With the right script, I would enjoy another go around with the Major Payne character. Hulk (Widescreen 2-Disc Special Edition)ReviewsA great buy for fans of the Incredible Hulk. It has action, suspense, a little bit of romance, thrills, and a fun for the kid in all of us film. One of the best super hero mvoies made. The script is fantastic, it makes the whole story thing more then just a "surprise, out comes the rabbit"--and for this some hollywood types gun it down, This movie has some very good actors giving the best they have. It has actual real science cuts interwoven in it, especially in the opening. A real rarity in the movie genre. As far as the super hero genre goes this is right there w/ X-men 1 and 2 and dark knight in terms of character accuracy, acting and script. Much better than any other Hulk out there Eric Bana in The Hulk was pretty good, Of course the cgi and some details were cheesy, I think it was a Good Hulk movie, of course compared to Edward Norton in The Newer Hulk. See this and the Newer Hulk. I prefer the Newer Hulk Movie. I'm not the biggest fan of Ang Lee(I like two other movies by him) but this gem has been denied for far too long. I think people expected this movie to be a brainless blockbuster and were upset when it didnt turn out the way they expected it to be. Hulk is pretty good with a few flaws(which I will mention later). Its definitely better than its given credit for. The movie details Bruce Banner(Eric Bana)'s coming to be the Hulk. It deals with the Hulk's origin from Bruce's childhood to his teenage years. It also deals with his estranged father(Nick Nolte) coming back into his life. It deals with his relationship with Betty Ross(Jennifer Connelly)and her father Thaddeus(Sam Elliott)hatred for Bruce. The acting is good all around. Eric Bana gives a heartfelt performance as Bruce Banner. Jennifer Connelly is a sweetheart as Betty Ross and Sam Elliott is perfect as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Nick Nolte is also great as Bruce's eccentric father. Josh Lucas is the quintessential jerk as Talbot. As much as I like this movie I cant give it five stars because... Flaws: 1. The numerous attempts to get us to feel sympathy for Bruce being the Hulk. I applaud the effort but it just doesnt work for me. Bruce never hurts a loved one as the Hulk. We can only feel sympathy for him if he hurts everybody he loves as Hulk. But most of the people he hurts had it coming so to get us to sympathize with him is kind of difficult. 2. The split screens. Split screens are useful when there is action. This movie tends to overdue them alot. When there is action split screens are useful but when nothing is happening on screen you waste the effect o split screens. 3. Length. I have no problem with this movie being long but there are some scenes in the movie that are superfluous to the storyline and should have been cut. Other than that this movie is pretty good. I'll admit that at first viewing I thought it was decent but second viewing I liked it a lot more. Its definitely better than the instantly forgettable 2008 sequel. And before I leave I must settle this argument. While the 2008 sequel is not bad its not memorable. How can you forget Hulk battling the gamma mutated puppies in this movie? How can you forget the helicopter chase scene? How can you forget Hulk handing Talbot his rear end on a platter? How can you forget the insight about Science and the harmful experiments ran on humans and animals? Hulk 2008 the only thing you remember is a solid performance by Edward Norton and thats it. Instantly forgettable and was brought to you by the same director that gave you the easily forgotten Transporter 2. In conclusion Hulk is an underrated and unappreciated gem from a director that deserved more credit than he got for this movie. 2 thumbs up and thanks a million to everybody that defends this movie. This was a present for my son. The quality was outstanding and the price was great. Average Rating:![]() |

When the Hulk gets angry, his movie gets good, so you wish he'd get angry more often. Accepting this challenge after the triumphant Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, director Ang Lee has created an ambitious film, based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, that succeeds as a cautionary tale about mad science and traumatized children coping with legacies of pain... |

Nine Dragons (Harry Bosch)ReviewsIf you have read Michael Connelly before you know that he is one of the best crime writers out there. In "9 Dragons" Detective Harry Bosch is trying to track down the killer of a southside liquor store owner. When the trail leads across the path of one of the Chinese triads in Los Angeles, Bosch receives a threat telling him to back off or else. The case becomes personal for Bosch. "9 Dragons" is another fast-paced read with plenty of twists and turns from one of the best writers around. Harry is back and Connelly has create a real page turner. Unlike so many of his contemporaries -- Crais, Child, Hall, White, DeMille, etc.,-- Connelly's character is fully developed and not a superman. Most importantly, the past books are relevant in understanding the character and events. Boy, what else can I say after reading this novel? The shocking the way things unfolded in the end, abrupt and violent deaths to recurring characters, and a sudden change to the once "bullet-proof" Harry Bosch are but a few turn of events in this novel. This was a terrific novel and definitely one of Bosch's best outing since Echo Park. Not to give away any plot twist, I must say I was a wee bit disappointed in how quickly a major character was killed off - seems to be how Mr. Connelly conveniently resolves most of his character's personal conundrums. I also found that a major break in the story seemed far fetched even by Bosch's standards. But such is the fate of a self professed lone wolf with a mission. Harry's 39 hour whirlwind ordeal in the far East was fast paced, adrenaline-driven, and could have only been accomplished by a man with a mission. There were few slow moments in the novel and aptly so as a loss in momentum could be fatal. Driven by his instinct from years on the force, trusting a stranger sharing his grief on a foreign land, Harry plunges headlong into his quest literally on the other side of the world. Every once in awhile, I get the feeling Michael Connelly has a decent idea for a book, sketches it out, and hands it off to either his lazier alter-ego or a creative writing grad student to flesh out into a book. This is definitely one of those. Without going into detail or ruining the experience for someone, like me, who has read pretty much everything the guy has written and will continue to do so, there are way too many examples of sloppy police work, bad assumptions, terrible dialogue.... I could go on. All the elements that normally make him such an interesting author are missing! I'll chalk this one up as an aberration, albeit one that's becoming a little more common for him. I have to hand it to Michael Connelly, even his lesser works are better than most authors great works. Having said that let me add that 9 Dragons was very atmospheric and had a great and believable plot line that was enjoyable to read. There were a number of plot twists we have come to expect from his works but Connelly some how makes them not silly. This offers human characters who are imperfect, petulant but also willing and able to overcome their short comings for the greater good. I would most liken Connelly to Robert Parker at his prime in that he builds believable characters in worthwhile stories. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who likes murder mystery, crime drama or just good fiction. Average Rating:![]() |

The ScarecrowReviewsAn excellent book by an author whose other books I have read. I like a brief sumary of the book to see if I might have already read it. I read many books of this gender. Its just another book with a murder investigation. It does not tie you down or make does not have a nail biting finish etc. I bought this because it is in Top 10 Books: Mystery & Thrillers. I was kind of disappointed and lost some credibility points for the top 10 book selection at amazon. Jack McEvoy, a newspaper reporter, was the primary character in one of Connelly's early works, The Poet. In fact, before The Poet, all Connely's books featured Harry Bosch as the main character, so Jack is really the second main character Connelly ever developed. Since The Poet, Jack played minor roles in several other Connelly books, but The Scarecrow is the first one in which he is the main character again. In the Scarecrow, Jack finds himself a victim of the shrinking newspaper industry--they are laying him off. Determined to go out with a bang, McEvoy decides to write a Pulitzer worthy piece and begins researching his story with the help of his replacement on the crime beat at the L.A. Times, Angela. He gets more than he bargained for and finds himself up against a serial killer for the second time in his life. He calls in Rachel Walling, an FBI agent he met during the Poet case, to assist in tracking down the killer. Jack finally figures out the killer's "signature" which leads to the killer's identity being discovered...now all they need to do is catch him...easier said than done. The Scarecrow is a fast-paced read with a fairly predictable ending. Still, I would recommend The Scarecrow and hope to see Jack in another Connelly book soon! Wow, what a lousy book by one of the best authors around. I guess he had to grind out a book to fulfill a contract obligation or something, but this book was lame from beginning to end. Connelly ought to stick to writing about Bosch or the Lincoln Lawyer. McEvoy seems to bring out the author's worst qualities. I found the book wanting on many fronts: unrealistic plot, lousy characterization, too much serendipitous coincidences to move the plot forward, a weak ending, and so on and so forth. It pains me to find one of my favorite authors serving up such a bomb. He can do a lot better -- a lot better! It's not a good day for Jack McEvoy. A crime reporter at the L.A. Times for twenty years, he has just been told that he will be laid off in two weeks. Jack decides to go out with one last good story. He has been contacted by the grandmother of a sixteen year old gang member who has been arrested for a grisly murder the media is calling The Trunk Murder. She insists her grandson is innocent, and Jack decides to look into the story. As Jack starts to investigate, he quickly realises that not only is the teenager innocent, but the reason he is not guilty is that there is a serial killer out there who has been killing women in different states and leaving them in car trunks. He starts an investigation, aided by FBI Agent Rachel Walling. He worked with Rachel on his biggest story years before. That story was the detection and capture of The Poet, another killer. This time is different however. The killer is investigating Jack and Rachel as intently as they are investigating him, and is targeting them as his next victims. Along with the chase, the reader learns about how technology plays into both the killer's targeting of his victims, and the investigation into his crime. Michael Connelly readers will not be disappointed in The Scarecrow. It delivers what one expects from Connelly, a page-turner with enough twists and turns to keep the plot moving. The story is taut and the reader is involved in the investigation. The love interest between Jack and Rachel adds another dimension. This book is recommended for mystery readers and Connelly fans. Although it is another in a Jack McEvoy series, it can easily stand on its own. Average Rating:![]() |

The Brass Verdict: A NovelReviewsMickey Haller was first introduced as a Connelly character in Connelly's last effort, Lincoln Lawyer, and is the primary character in The Brass Verdict. The Brass Verdict is a courtroom drama, and, like Lincoln Lawyer, I would compare it to early John Grisham plots. In the Brass Verdict, Haller comes back from a year long hiatus to take over the practice of a murdered colleague. He finds himself in the middle of a high profile case and scrambles to get up to speed given his new client will not consider postponing the trial. Harry Bosch, the star of many of Connelly's earlier books, and Mickey cross paths as Harry works to solve Mickey's former colleague's murder and Mickey himself begins to fear he is a target for the murderer. My only complaint about The Brass Verdict is that Harry plays such a minor role. It probably is a little disingenuous to promote The Brass Verdict as a Harry Bosch book. Michael Connelly has another bestseller with "The Brass Verdict;" a very satisfying novel that introduces two of our favorite protaganists to each other: Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch. Mickey Haller is returning to the pratice of law after taking a year off. He "inherits" an entire practice from a colleague who had been murdered. Of all people, Harry Bosch is the investigator assigned to the murder case. With two such strong personalities, Haller and Bosch are sure to conflict. Although Connelly never seems to write anything but winners, "The Brass Verdict" shoots a bulls-eye. The book should be called "Redundancy". pg. 26 "I had never met Judge holder before" pg. 27 "I don't believe we have met before, have we?" pg. 46 "I was sure I had never met the man before." Who proof reads these books? I may or may not go on to page 47. Having loved "The Lincoln Lawyer", I was excitedly awaiting the follow-up, but this book is a light-weight effort by Connelly. Harry Bosch is less than a supporting character and where is the Mickey Haller with wife, girlfriend, daughter and complicated relationships with all three? Unnecessarily long, the last 100+ pages use a 'voice-over' narration like bad movies by Haller in order to explain the plot's solution and bring this over-rated book to a close. Where is the Connelly from the Black Echo, Ice trilogy or even The Poet? Like The Narrows, Connelly is living off of his reputation. When LA lawyer Mickey Haller gets the news that his old colleague Jerry Vincent has been murdered, he also inherits all of his clients, including Walter Elliot, a Hollywood studio boss. Elliot has been accused of murdering his wife and her lover. This is going to be a high profile trial, with big fees and plenty of media coverage. If Mickey can win this one, his career will be firmly back on track. The problem is that Vincent was found murdered in his office garage and the detective handling the case, Harry Bosch, believes that the murderer must be one of Vincent's clients. The Lincoln Lawyer was my first Connelly novel, and I was delighted that this one also features Mickey Haller. There's plenty of court and police action in this novel and while Harry Bosch and Jack McEvoy both appear, it is Mickey's novel. I found the presence of Harry a distraction, and was irritated by aspects of his involvement in the story. Jennifer Cameron-Smith Average Rating:![]() |
